With the consistent partnership of Speedway Charities, the Redwood Empire Food Bank has strengthened the nutrition safety net for low-income children throughout our county. In 2001, when our partnership began, we had one program for low-income preschoolers. We now have a total of seven programs that provide nutrition assistance for preschoolers and school age children. Through our programs and our network of partner organizations, our food reaches 31,000 Sonoma County children each month.

Currently, our partnership with Speedway Charities involves opening two new sites for our BackPack Program which will serve 96 children each week.  This program operates at schools in low income areas and provides at-risk children with nutritious child-friendly groceries on Friday afternoons. The food packs include 7-10 lbs of healthy foods and nutritional information packets that can be used by families to create a meal. These particularly nutritious foods, and the education provided, create a basis for a lifetime of healthy choices.
